News - Wakemans Welcome New Trainee Surveyors

National property and construction consultancy Wakemans has taken on two new trainee quantity surveyors as part of its commitment to providing opportunities for young people to develop a career in the construction industry.
Twenty year old Neil Jones from Sutton Coldfield left the Arthur Terry School with A Levels in ICT, Maths and Product Design and then spent a year at Nottingham Trent University studying Multi-media.  He decided to switch to a construction/surveying option when he heard about the trainee openings at Wakemans.
“Several members of my immediate family work in the construction industry, so I have always had an interest in the built environment,” says Neil.
“I’ve decided it’s where I want to make my career and am enjoying working on a whole range of projects before developing my skills within a specific department.”
Neil follows in the footsteps of many surveyors who have benefited from Wakemans’ flexible approach to education and training.  Under the programme he will gain experience and develop competency while also studying part-time at Birmingham City University (formerly UCE) for a degree in quantity surveying.
In his spare time Neil plays five-a-side football for the Power League at Star City, and is a keen golfer.  He also enjoys running, tennis and badminton.
Corrine Murray, 25, graduated with a degree in Property Management from Birmingham City University and has now returned there to study part time for a Masters degree in Construction.
“I’ve always been interested in the construction industry, especially themed projects and, more recently, valuations.  Buildings can transform a site and I want to be a part of that,” she says.
Like Neil, Corrine is benefiting from a work experience programme which gives her an insight into the many different aspects of surveying before she joins one of Wakemans’ teams.
Corrine was born and bred in Birmingham and currently lives in Edgbaston.  She enjoys going to the gym and is keen on drama.
“Taking a flexible approach to training means we can help plug the skills gap by developing the next generation of surveyors and as they go on to achieve their potential, so we benefit from employing some of the region’s brightest talents,” says Wakemans director Adrian Aston.
“We are delighted to welcome Neil and Corrine, who will be able to develop their skills and gain hands on experience while working towards their respective qualifications.”
