News - Wakemans on site with £5m Wolverhampton Travelodge

Wolverhampton is to get its first Travelodge and the UK’s fastest growing budget hotel chain has appointed national property and construction consultancy Wakemans to oversee the development of its new £5m hotel in the city centre.
Wakemans is acting as employer’s agent on the hotel, which is located in Waterloo Road, just off the city’s ring road and opposite Wolverhampton Wanderers FC’s Molineux stadium.
Travelodge is converting the former Bankfield House, a 1960s building previously used as offices and teaching facilities by the University of Wolverhampton, into a 99-room hotel.  It will also feature Bar Café, Travelodge’s own brand restaurant which serves breakfast and light snacks throughout the day.
“The Local Authority had determined that the property could only be used as office space, so we were called on to negotiate the removal of the restrictive covenant.  This was secured on the basis that all building would be within the existing walls,” says Wakemans director Shaun Baugh.
“This is Travelodge’s first hotel in Wolverhampton and it benefits from good access and extensive car parking to the rear of the site.”
Tony O’Brien, Travelodge’s Development Director said; “We fought off some tough competition to secure this new hotel and are delighted to open our first hotel in the city, in such a fantastic location.  We want to give travellers every reason to visit Wolverhampton and stay longer – we see increasing the availability of low cost accommodation in the area as central to achieving this objective.“
The new Wolverhampton Travelodge will provide much needed value for money accommodation in one of the Midlands’ largest cities, with visiting football fans likely to be a prime target audience.
The Travelodge is one of several new hotels planned for Wolverhampton, which enjoys a thriving hotel industry.  Contractor Anglo Holt started on site in March and the Travelodge – one of 44 scheduled to open this year – is due for completion in December 2008.
