News - Wakemans Appointed on £50m Regeneration Scheme

National property and construction consultancy Wakemans is working with Castlemore Securities and its dedicated residential and regeneration arm, Spring UR, on the landmark £50m mixed use scheme in Mere Green, near Sutton Coldfield.
Spring UR will develop high quality retail premises and residential accommodation on a three-acre Brownfield site located at the corner of Lichfield Road and Mere Green Road.
Wakemans has been appointed project manager on the development, which is Spring UR’s flagship scheme and was approved by Birmingham City Council following a six-month consultation period with the local community.
The aim is to regenerate the area by creating a town centre for Mere Green, giving it a focus and broadening its appeal to local residents and visitors, while maintaining its character.  The developer also wants to make the site attractive to locals as well as high street retailers.
A landscaped ‘village square’ will be surrounded by 25 boutique style shops, linked to restaurants and cafes by landscaped pedestrian walkways, creating a safe environment.  Meanwhile, 152 apartments will be built in the three upper storeys and 226 parking spaces will be provided.
"Castlemore has set a high environmental accreditation for this innovative development, which really will offer local residents the best of both worlds and is also set to attract visitors and businesses to the town, paving the way for future growth," says Wakemans associate director Bob Simpson.
Wakemans is currently out to tender for the demolition works, which are due to start on site at the beginning of April.  The main contract will be tendered in March, with construction commencing in July 2008.  The scheme is scheduled for completion in 2010.
